Understanding the role of the essay in college admissions

What we covered
As an essay coach, I've seen that the biggest barrier to my students writing great essays is a misunderstanding of the college admissions process.
In this webinar, we reviewed the application reading process in depth so that you can understand exactly how admissions officers evaluate college essays. The information I share synthesizes over ten books about the admissions process, as well as interviews with current and former admissions officers.
Once you learn about the admissions process, you'll gain clarity and be able to better sort through confusing and contradictory advice about college essays. Here are some of the main takeaways we discussed:
• Essays don't need to be unique but they do need to be memorable.
• You don't need to write in a professional and polished style. In fact, an overly polished essay often gets in the way of communicating clearly.
• Most applicants miscalculate their strategy and believe a safe essay is less risky, when in fact a safe essay is more risky.
